About the Book
Planting Stories is a delightful biography of the groundbreaking librarian Pura Teresa Belpré. We are told about how Pura’s visit to New York City turned into her new life there. When Pura came across the opportunity to be hired as a bilingual assistant at the New York City Public Library, she knew it was her calling. Pura Belpré’s love sharing stories is evident by the folktale events she would host and her motivation for “planting” stories such as Peréz y Martina for children in New York City and all over the world.
Anika A. Denise’s text along with Paola Escobar’s illustrations work wonderfully together to tell the life of this inspirational librarian. The book jacket and end papers have gorgeous colorful illustrations that are reflective of Pura’s culture and work. I only wish the beauty of the dust jacket was also on the actual cover of the book. The typeface is interesting as it plays with regular and bold font to emphasize certain words and its illustrations include single and double page spreads. In addition, one important theme from this book teaches children to follow their dreams!
